Attractions
Cerddin
Cottages lie just outside the villages of Dinas Mawddwy and Llanymawddwy,
and as such are perfectly situated for a holiday in Snowdonia, a
National Park and area of outstanding natural beauty with its glorious
lakes and mountains. The
cottages nestle in the spectacular countryside of the upper Dyfi
Valley in Snowdonia, a wonderful setting for bird watching (look
out for Red Kites circling above) and walking or simply relaxing.
Nearby is Bwlch y Groes Pass, the highest in Wales, leading to Bala
Lakes – with watersports, a lakeside railway and a sports
centre (12 miles), and Vyrnwy an RSPB reserve. A
short drive over Oerddrws Pass (Bwlch Oerddrws), one of the highest
in Wales, brings you to the small town of Dolgellau which stands
at the foot of Cadair Idris. 17 miles away lies Machynlleth, once
the ancient capital of Wales and today a busy market town (market
day Wednesday) which offers delightful shops and galleries (including
Y Tabernacl - the Museum of Modern Art in Wales), good pubs and
restaurants and, of course, the seat of the ancient parliament of
Owain Glyndwr. The coast is not far from Cerddin Cottages and about
20 miles away is Aberdovey, the jewel of Cardigan Bay. A delightful
village, Aberdovey lies at the mouth of the Dyfi Estuary and has
miles of golden sands, interesting shops and galleries and The Penhollig
Arms - Welsh Seafood Pub of the year 2005. The
sands at Barmouth are within 15 miles.
Bala, Talyllyn
and Vyrnwy lakes are all within easy driving distance, as are many
tourist attractions including several narrow gauge railways, Snowdon
itself with the nearby `electric mountain', the Centre for Alternative
Technology and the famous `Italian' village of Portmeirion featured
in "The Prisoner" television series.
For those feeling
less ambitious, 5 miles will take you to Dinas Mawddwy with its
village pub Y Llew Coch (The Red Lion), the Buckley Pines, the Dolbrodmeath
and the Brigands Inn at Mallwyd.
